Real Madrid Boycott FIFA Club World Cup: Carlo Ancelotti says Real Madrid will not take part in the 2025 Club World Cup, which is to be played in a brand new 32-team format.
The Italian coach assures that other clubs will follow the example of the Madrilenians. This is an unequivocal decision.
Real Madrid, winners of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League will not participate in the next FIFA Club World Cup, which is scheduled to be played under a brand new format with 32 teams in the United States in 2025, from June 15-July 13.
“FIFA forgets it, the players and clubs will not participate in this tournament,” proclaimed Carlo Ancelotti in the columns of ll Giornale. A single Real Madrid match is worth 20 million and FIFA wants to give us that amount for the entire cup. Negative. Like us, other clubs will reject the invitation.”, the five-time Champions League winner stated.
Last year, FIFA brought about a real revolution for its Club World Cup. While only seven teams participated in the 2023 edition (Manchester City, Fluminense, Club Leon, Al-Ahly, Urawa Red Diamonds, Auckland City, Al-Ittihad), 32 clubs must be invited to the 2025 edition to be held over a month with a format similar to that of the FIFA World Cup, with groups of four teams then a final phase.
The new tournament must be organized every four years. Europe, which has twelve tickets for this Club World Cup, must send the winners of the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 Champions League (Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City).
The other qualified European teams (Salzburg, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Juventus Turin, FC Porto, Benfica Lisbon, Atlético de Madrid) were determined based on a ranking established on the results of the last four seasons.
It remains to be seen whether or not other clubs will follow Real Madrid’s footsteps to withdraw from the tournament.
