“It’s going to be a really big challenge to beat Sudan” – Otto Addo Warry of Kwesi Appiah’s Tough Side

Ghana head coach Otto Addo says the Black Stars face a herculean task in defeating Sudan after the two national teams were drawn in Group F of the 2025 AFCON qualifying tournament on Thursday.

The group also contains Angola and Niger.

Former Ghana boss James Kwesi Appiah is the head coach of Sudan and has won all of his four competitive matches, topping the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group B with 10 points.

“Secondly, we have Sudan who are really, really doing well at the moment with Kwesi Appiah which I know personally. He is a very good coach. They are not a known squad but like I said, they are doing really, really good at the moment in the World Cup qualification games, very, very tough to beat. It’s going to be a really big challenge to beat them and for this, we have to be at 100% best.”

“But I am excited to play against them, and like I said it’s going to be tough. It’s not easy but we have a strong team and we surely can beat them, this is for sure.”, concluded by Otto Addo.

Kwesi Appiah qualified and coached Ghana at the 2024 World Cup in Brazil with Addo serving as one his scouts.

The latter, a former Ghana international midfielder, was named Black Stars head coach in September 2022, guiding the team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals after edging out Nigeria 1-1 on aggregate in the playoffs.

The former Borussia Dortmund coach left his role following the World Cup having failed to win a game at the Qatar tournament. However, after Chris Hughton’s unsuccessful tenure as Ghana boss, failing to win a game at AFCON 2023, Addo was reappointed as head coach of the Ghana national football team for a second stint.

In his second coming, Otto Addo has taken charge of two of Ghana’s four games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, winning 2-1 on the road against Mali and securing a 4-3 home victory against Central African Republic to move joint-top of Group I on 9 points with Comoros.
