Battle of the Lions as England set up Round of 16 clash against Senegal

Battle of the Lions : The Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor will host the mouth-watering Round of 16 clash between England and Senegal on December 4th during the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Three Lions hammered Wales by 3-0 on Tuesday night at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan with goals from Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford who netted a brace and Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden.

The United striker scored a superb free-kick to put England ahead in the 50th minute before City’s Foden made it 2-0 just a minute later with a cool tap in from Harry Kane’s shot across the face of the Wales goal.

In the 68th minute Rashford netted his second goal of the match and his third in the competition. He received a great ball from another Manchester City player Kalvin Philips and kept a great composure in the box to drive home with his weaker left foot as the winners of the 1966 World Cup run riot.

The team of Gareth Southgate collected seven points in their three group matches. They scored nine goals and conceded just twice to win Group B.

Senegal beat Ecuador to finish second in Group A

Meanwhile earlier on Tuesday , Senegal became the first African team to qualify for the Round of 16 the World Cup after they defeated Ecuador by 2-1 at the Khalifa International stadium in Al Rayyan to finish second behind Netherlands who won Group A.

It was not until the 44th minute that the first goal of the match was scored from the spot by Watford forward Ismaila Sarr. The Premier League star was brought down in the box by Piero Hincapie and he stepped forward to successfully convert it.

Ecuador equalized in the 68th minute through Moises Caicedo but Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly scored the winning goal in the 70th. The former Napoli center-back was at the right place at the right time to slot home his first goal of the competition from a free-kick rebound.

The qualification to the knockout round is more remarkable for Aliou Cisse and his players considering the fact that they are without star attraction Sadio Mane who was ruled out of the competition at the last minute.

They lost to Holland in their group opener but bounced back to defeat host team Qatar by 3-1 and completed their group play with a solid 2-1 win over Ecuador.

Confirmed Round of 16 Clashes :

Netherlands vrs USA on December 3rd

England vrs Senegal on December 4th
