Wollacot or Ati-Zigi for Angola Match ?

Chris Hughton on Starting Goalkeeper vs Angola : Ghana take on Angola at the Babayara sports stadium on Thursday during Match-Day Three of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series.

First choice goalkeeper Joseph Wollacot missed the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar through injury and in his absence Lawrence Ati – Zigi impress at the tournament.

The St. Gallen number one started and completed all three games of the Black Stars ; a 3-2 defeat against Portugal , a 3-2 victory over South Korea and a 2-0 loss against South America side Uruguay.

Head coach Otto Addo left his role after the group stage exit of the Black Stars. Technical advisor to Addo , Chris Hughton , was confirmed as the new Black Stars head coach earlier this month.

The former Brighton and Holve Albion manager has been handed a contract till December 2024.

Whilst there has been changes in terms of the head coach role , the assistant coaches George Boateng , Masud Didi Dramani and goalkeepers trainer Richard Kingson keep their positions.

Wollacot is back to the Ghana national team selection and so who starts against Angola on Thursday?

This is one of the toughest decisions that Hughton and Kingson have to make for tomorrow’s game.

The Charlton Athletic keeper suffered a minor injury during Tuesday’s training session at the Babayara stadium but he has been declared fully fit and available for selection against the Palancas Negras by the Black Stars medics.

When the question was posed to Chris Hughton at the pre-match presser on Wednesday , this is what he said :

“The answer is, we have a team and a squad that are all working hard for positions and what will happen is that over the period of tonight and tomorrow, I will name my team so at the moment there wouldn’t be anybody apart from my close technical staff who will know what the team is.”
