Moroccan football on the rise as U23 team wins 2023 CAF U23 AFCON

Moroccan Football is Rapidly Flourishing : Moroccan football is rapidly progressing in many aspects of the game and success of the Morocco U23 national men’s soccer team at the CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations is the latest indicator that proves that football in the North African country is flourishing.

The CAF Executive Committee , on Friday , visited and held its meeting in the newly built headquarters of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (“FRMF”) in Rabat and CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe said :

“We would like to congratulate the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football and our Brother Fouzi Lekjaa for their world class headquarters. We would also like to express our gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Government and people of Morocco.

The excellent headquarters that we visited today and the world class stadiums and football infrastructure in Morocco are good examples of the success and accomplishments that can be achieved through partnerships between our African Governments and our National Football Associations.”

On the pitch they are winning and off the pitch , Morocco is still advancing. See the five key indicators below :

1.The Morocco FA has the most points on the current CAF 5-year ranking

The CAF 5-year ranking system is used by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to determine the number of clubs that each member association may enter its club football competitions; the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

At present, those associations ranked in the top 12 may enter two teams into each of the two club competitions, while the remaining associations are limited to a single team in each competition.

On the current rankings , Morocco has 118 points as table toppers. They are followed by Egypt who have 114 points , Algeria are third with 94 points and South Africa have 78.5.

2.First African team to reach the finals of the FIFA World Cup

Previously the African benchmark at the Mundiale was the quarter-final stage and it was held by Cameroon , Senegal and Ghana but Morocco went a level ahead at the Qatar tournament.

3.WAC of Morocco have reached the CAF Champions League final four times out of the last seven editions of the competition.

Wydad AC won the 2017 and 2022 Champions League titles and were losing finalists in 2019 and 2023.

4.Two Moroccan clubs have won 4 CAF Confederation Cup titles in the last six years

Raja Casablanca in 2018 and 2021 while RS Berkane did it in 2020 and 2022.

5.Morocco is ranked 24th best team in the world by FIFA and second best in Africa behind Senegal
