Rigobert Will Welcome Andre Onana : Cameroon national team head coach Rigobert Song has mentioned the case of Inter Milan goalkeeper André Onana who was forced into international retirement, the day after the 2022 World Cup ended.
The 26-year old Onana played the Indomitable Lions first match at the World Cup against Switzerland before being dropped in the second against Serbia.
The former FC Ajax custodian was then sent home from the tournament on 28 November by manager Rigobert Song due to a disciplinary issue related to arguments about the latter’s coaching tactics.
The goalkeeper went ahead and announced his retirement from international football on 23 December 2022.
However according to the coach, André Onana can always return to Cameroon national team selection if the Inter Milan player wants to.
“The door remains open to André Onana,” Song said at a press conference on Thursday.
“André himself should know what he wants. In a group, you need discipline. We are not going to let people do what they want. André is one of the best goalkeepers of the moment. We are not going to say the opposite. But I prefer to focus on the collective. He has to get into the collective,” Song said.
Cameroon take on Namibia on Friday for their third match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series.
