Chelsea 0 Real Madrid 2 : Here are the players who flopped and those who shone as CL holders reach semis

Chelsea 0 Real Madrid 2 Player Ratings on April 18th : Real Madrid completed the double over Chelsea FC in the quarter-finals of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League following their 2-0 win at the Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night as Brazilan wonderkid Rodrygo netted twice in the 58th and 80th minutes.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side thus won the tie by 4-0 aggregate success and will now face Manchester City or Bayern Munich in the semifinals.

Chelsea Player Ratings :

GK Kepa Arrizabalaga 6 – Did well

Great change is possible even in a big organisation like the Met. Not much he could do about either Rodrygo goal. Stood up to two efforts from Vinicius Jr. and series of tame shots.

Wesley Fofana 5 – Indifferent

Did a decent job on Vinicius for an hour but looked a little ragged after Real upped the ante.

Thiago Silva 5 – Indifferent

To his credit, Karim Benzema was anonymous and hooked early. But the veteran was skinned by Fede Valverde for Rodrygo’s second goal and vulnerable to Real’s speed.

Trevoh Chalobah 4 – A flop

At fault for the opening goal after recklessly flying into a challenge with Rodrygo and losing out. Nearly made another costly mistake to allow Vinicius through on goal but Mudryk got back to help out.

Reece James 7 – Did well

Looked back to his something like his best in a first half full of purpose, which ended with a cross for Cucurella’s big chance. Less influential after moving into centre midfield.

Mateo Kovacic 7 – Did well

Always available at the base of midfield to give Chelsea a platform, which they ultimately did little with.

Enzo Fernandez 6 – Did well

Clearly belongs at this level but would benefit from being surrounded by more creativity. Drew a sharp save from Thibaut Courtois in the second half and his passing was on point.

N’Golo Kante 6 – Did well

Squandered great chances either side of half-time, albeit the second following a great block from a defender. Worked the right channel well and got in good positions – but Chelsea will rue him not bringing his shooting boots.

Marc Cucurella 5 – Indifferent performance

Should have scored an the end of the first half but dawdled and shot too close to Courtois. Pressed high and left Chalobah isolated for Rodrygo’s goal.

Conor Gallagher 6 – Did well

Put himself about and created a good opening for Kante at 0-0 with a smart header. Also shot straight at Courtois. Deserves a run in the side now.

Kai Havertz 4 – A flop

Put in a shift but offered nothing in a way of cutting edge to a Chelsea side who started the game needing to score twice. Admittedly he lacked proper service but is not a reliable centre-forward at this level.

Real Madrid Player Ratings :

GK Thibaut Courtois 8 – A big hit

Impenetrable, the former Chelsea ‘keeper audibly came under the cosh from the Stamford Bridge terraces, but he didn’t let the jeers affect his performance, instead relishing the animosity and snuffing out any danger Lampard’s men posed. His save on Cucurella in the first half was world class.

Dani Carvajal 7 – A hit

Sensible and strong at the back, the experienced defender added a real grit, aggression and composure to Ancelotti’s rearguard.

Eder Militao 9 – A big Hit

A defensive monster, the Brazilian centre-back put his body on the line and blocked absolutely everything Chelsea threw at him, notably closing the space on Kante when the Frenchman looked destined to score in the second half.

His ball through to Rodrygo was also the catalyst in Real breaking the deadlock and grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck. A supreme pass.

David Alaba 6 – Did well

Defended valiantly in the first half to keep Chelsea at bay, while his passing range and distribution was equally as solid, before he was eventually brought off at half-time.

Eduardo Camavinga 7 – A hit. He is no lifting those metals for nothing !

he young Frenchman is starting to come into his own in an unnatural position at left-back. With such a traffic jam of talent in the middle of the pitch, Camavinga has been moonlighting as a full-back, and tonight he added a real tenacity and flair to Ancelotti’s flank, holding his own against the aggressively attacking James.

Toni Kroos 7 – A hit

Calmness personified. When Chelsea threatened to ramp up the pressure and hog the ball, Kroos was there to break up the play and relax the tempo, giving Real the initiative.

Luka Modric 7 – A hit

A few hairy moments in the first half, but to focus on those rare loose passes would be to misinterpret Modric’s game. The metronomic pass master was the tempo-setter for Real and came to the fore in the second half when his side needed him.

There was a moment when it looked as though Chelsea would come out in the second half with the bit between their teeth, but Modric’s skill and enterprise thwarted any attempts for the hosts to come alive after the restart.

Federico Valverde 9 – A big Hit

Absolutely sensational. Valverde was the midfield fulcrum and manned the engine room with distinction. His infectious energy and zeal kept Real playing at a relentless pace and ensured that when they broke, they broke with intent and aggression.

Rodrygo 9 – A big Hit

Real’s source of goals but also their most lethal attacking threat away from the finishes.

The fleet-footed Brazilian struck the woodwork in the first half and toyed with Cucurella at times, but his crowning moment(s) came after the restart where he instigated the deadlock-breaker almost single-handedly and then put the game beyond reach with his second.

Vinicius Junior 6 – Did well but the night belonged to his compatriot Rodrygo !

A quiet game for the majority, but the Brazilian started to come alive towards the latter stages of the contest and played a pivotal role to set up Rodrygo for Real’s eventual breakthrough on the hour mark.

Karim Benzema 5 – Quiet game for Karim !

Uncharacteristically quiet, the Real skipper often cut an isolated figure up front and missed the one big chance that presented itself to him before being taken off 20 minutes from time.
