Morocco upset Belgium in Group F
The Atlas Lions of Morocco caused the third upset at the FIFA World Cup after they defeated Belgium by 2-0 on Sunday afternoon during the second round of group matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The African team remain unbeaten in Qatar after two matches played.
Sampdoria’s Abdelhamid Sabiri and Toulouse forward Zakaria Aboukhlal scored the goals in the 73rd and 92nd minutes respectively.
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bono of Sevilla pulled out of the match after he had warmed up and sang the national anthem alongside his friends. Bono reportedly felt uneasiness just before the start of the match. In his place , second choice Munir of Al Wehda played and went ahead to keep a clean sheet against the Europeans.
Substitute Sabiri beat Real Marid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a superb free kick to put The Atlas Lions ahead in the 73rd minute. Belgium continued to look for the equalizer but things got messier at stoppage time as France-based striker Aboukhlal guided a shot into the roof of the net from an initial effort of Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech.
Belgium paraded all their stars ; Eden Hazard , Kevin De Bruyne , Thorgan Hazard , Axel Witsel , Michy Bastshuayi and Romelu Lukaku came off the bench but they failed to sparkle against the North Africans who claimed a great win despite enjoying just 33% of ball possession. The Africans were still able to match the four shots on target of Belgium who had 67% of ball possession.
Morocco are still unbeaten at the World Cup in Qatar after drawing their opening match 0-0 against Croatia. Meanwhile Croatia made light work of spanking Canada by 4-1 in Al Rayyan with goals from Hoffenheim striker Andrej Kramaric who netted twice , Livaja Marko and Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer.
On four points each , the North Africans are only second to Croatia on the Group F table due to better goal difference of the team of Luka Modric.
Germany still winless in Group E
Germany remain without a win at the World Cup after drawing against Spain Al Khor. Die Mannschaft needed Niclas Fullkrug’s 83rd minute equalizer to avoid another embarrassing defeat. The Werder Bremen striker was assisted by Jamal Musiala to cancel out Alvaro Morata’s 62nd minute opener for the winners of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
In the other encounter Costa Rica recorded their first win of the tournament thanks to Keysher Fuller’s late winner.
