Ecuador Edge Out Qatar : Former West Ham striker Enner Valencia fired a superb brace to help Ecuador defeat Qatar by 2-0 in the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.
The South Americans went into the break with a commanding lead with Valencia’s goals in the 16th minute through the spot and a great header effort in the 31st.
Valencia saw his 2nd minute opener of the game ruled out for offside but the Fenerbahce attacker finally had his name on the score sheet after Qatar goalkeeper Al Sheeb Saad committed a penalty and the former Premier League star made no mistakes from the spot.
The Turkey-based forward is thus the first player to score a goal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Senegal , without Sadio Mane , play the Netherlands on Monday to close Day One for Group A.
Qatar play against Senegal on November 25th whilst Ecuador meet Netherlands on the same day.
